ETF Outflows and Strategy's Bitcoin Sale
About $3 billion flowed out of U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs over 10 trading days. CoinDesk reported that U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw $2.97 billion in net outflows from May 15 to May 29, marking the longest consecutive outflow streak on record.
But here is the strange part. Even as money kept leaving the ETFs, Bitcoin seemed to hold up better than I expected for a while. I kept thinking, "With this much money leaving the ETFs, shouldn't Bitcoin be falling harder? Huh. It is holding up pretty well."
Then the news came out that Michael Saylor's company Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, had sold some bitcoin. If you only look at the number, it was not a big deal. Strategy sold 32 BTC, worth about $2.5 million. Since Strategy holds more than 840,000 BTC, that sale was less than 0.004% of its total holdings.
But Bitcoin seemed to start falling from around that point.
Strategy has long been a symbolic company in Bitcoin. It stood for the idea that bitcoin is an asset you buy, not an asset you sell. Michael Saylor has also repeatedly sent the message that the company would keep buying bitcoin. So what felt bigger than the 32 BTC sale itself was the simple fact that Strategy can sell bitcoin too.
Of course, this does not look like something to panic about too early. According to CoinDesk, the sale was intended to fund preferred stock dividends. Saylor had also already said during the company's first-quarter earnings call that Strategy could sell some bitcoin to pay a dividend. So this was not a completely sudden sale.
Still, it did seem to carry a psychological shock. ETF outflows, Middle East risk, rising oil prices, and leveraged liquidations had already built up downward pressure. Then the headline "Strategy sold bitcoin" landed on top of all that. The market seemed to react less to the actual size of the sale and more to what it symbolized.
In an already weak market, Strategy's small sale felt like a crack in the narrative. I found myself thinking, "Ah, so this is what people mean when they say markets are driven by psychology."
Anyway, even if the amount was small, if Strategy is selling bitcoin at all, maybe this really is a difficult moment.
